Flexibility. Fitness. Your swing.

Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal has a piece by health columnist Tara Parker Pope about what your golf game might be saying about your fitness.
Some of it is no-brainer stuff. If you can’t make it around the course without taking a cart, yeah, chances are you’re not in the best of cardiovascular condition.
But she’s got some tips that might prove useful as well. Short drives, she writes, are “often a sign of a flexibility problem in your lower body, particularly your hip muscles.” Apparently sitting a lot (and who doesn’t these days?) can cause your hip flexor muscles to shorten and stay tight, which can affect your game.
Accuracy problems can be caused by problems with upper body posture, strength, or flexibility. And an inconsistent swing may indicate lack of core muscle strength.
More details if you follow the link.
For solutions, she quotes one Vijay Vad, “New York sports-medicine specialist and consultant for the PGA Tour,” and mentions his book, Golf Rx, which has stretches for golfers. I betcha yoga would work just fine too
Parker Pope also has a forum where she’s invited people to discuss her column. This comment made me laugh:
“I find that the most common cause of the golfing problems noted in your article is lack of talent.”
